Blog Tour: The Bone House – Caroline Mitchell

When hundreds of birds fall from the sky into Slayton’s lake in a terrifying freak event, the waters are dredged – revealing a dark, long-held secret.

An old pram is pulled from the depths, with the bones of a baby still strapped inside.

It’s the moment that new mother, Cora, has been dreading since she moved to Slayton – because someone knows, and is going to make her pay.

With the help of forensic anthropologist Sophia Hudson, and the extraordinary young Elliott Carter, Detective Sarah Noble gets to the bottom of a cold case that refuses to stay in the past. Will she survive the secrets of the bone house?

My thoughts: poor Cora, her childhood was pretty awful, her stepfather was a monster, and then in care, she was abused. She’s trying to start over, to rebuild her life with her baby daughter Millie, and her bookshop. But someone knows about her tragic past and is willing to expose her secrets.

Thankfully the police are more or less helpful and compassionate. At least Sarah is, she wants to help Cora, to punish the people who hurt her and protect her and Millie from harm. Can the two women triumph over the darkness that seems to have been following Cora her whole life?

The story goes to some dark and horrible places, filled with collections of bones and stories of witches and madness. There’s several really horrible deaths and some nasty people who don’t seem remotely sorry for the terrible things they’ve done. Cora isn’t one of them, I felt sorry for her, she’d been punished enough. Sarah is a great character, filled with righteousness and compassion, she’s kind and genuinely wants to help people. From the homeless man in the police station reception to her friend’s son Elliot. And now Cora.

Gripping and creepy, this was hugely enjoyable and with just the right amount of horror. Although I will be skipping Slayton on any holidays I take.

Blog Tour: The Heart Ladder – Sibby Spencer

As the war in Vietnam stutters to a close, a heavily pregnant Faith flees America for a new life in England. Leaving behind everything she knew, including the mystery of what happened to the father
of her unborn child after he went missing behind enemy lines. Three decades on and her son, thirty-something slacker Dan, knows he’s wasting his life in pubs, nightclubs, and his dead-end job. That all
changes, though, when a man with storied eyes and an old army jacket introduces himself as the father Dan never had a chance to know.
But is Jacob, a battered and broken war veteran, really who he claims to be? As Jacob’s true purpose in seeking him out becomes clear, Dan comes to understand that his life is very far from meaningless and that the choices he makes might have deadly and irredeemable consequences.
Readers who enjoy genre-bending books that play with themes of reality and identity will love The Heart Ladder!

Sibby Spencer is an author, poet, podcaster and regular book reviewer for BBC Radio Derby. She enjoys playing around with the themes of reality and possibility, and creating characters who are very human in their flaws – yet capable of revelation and redemption. She loves getting lost in a good novel, swimming in the sea, learning new things and dancing in her kitchen. She lives in Derbyshire with her husband and two children.

Facebook Instagram

My thoughts: this started off one way and then went somewhere very different. Dan is a somewhat aimless young man, working in a bookshop by day and hanging out at clubs and parties, getting wasted with his friends by night. He’s in love with his colleague Fiona, but won’t admit it. When a stranger appears, claiming to be his dad, Jacob, MIA in Vietnam years ago, he’s not sure what to believe.

He’s also getting involved with an activist group, but one that perhaps can’t be trusted, the leader Quinn, is charismatic but there’s a darkness in him and Dan might just be dragged into something terrible.

Can Dan learn the truth before it’s too late? Who is the man claiming to be his missing father? Why has he appeared now? The book takes a sudden twist that throws the whole plot so far in a different direction, but if Dan can learn the truth, he might be able to stop disaster in its tracks and find out about his past too.

Dan was a bit of a useless man to begin with, and he isn’t very nice to his mum, Faith, or Fiona at times, he seemed a bit lost. When he finally learns some things about Jacob, he realises he needs to change and fix his relationships. In doing that, his whole life gets better. I liked Faith and Fiona, I’m glad they got on. Dan needs them both to steady him and help him grow up a bit. An interesting and quirky read.

Blog Tour: The Art of Prophecy – Wesley Chu

Bestselling author Wesley Chu is back with a thrilling wuxia-inspired fantasy that questions what happens when a prophecy goes badly wrong.

Prophecies don’t make heroes: they only choose them. When Chosen One Jian falls short of his prophesied quest, he must find his own path to greatness.

The prophecy is clear: Wen Jian is the Chosen One, born to defeat the immortal Eternal Khan and save the kingdom. The only problem is that the prophecy is wrong.

Jian has been raised in splendor, trained by the best warriors, and celebrated before a single battle has been won. After all, he’s the chosen one, selected by prophecy to defeat the immortal god-king and free the kingdom for good. But when the prophecy is proven to be incorrect, Jian still has to find a way to succeed—and maybe even become a hero in his own right.

To save the kingdom, an unlikely band of heroes rise: Taishi, an old grandmaster who swore her days of battle were over; Sali, a warrior re-evaluating her allegiances; and Qisami, an assassin with questionable values. Together, the four embark on a journey more wondrous than any prophecy could forsee.

My thoughts: this was really good, fun and I can imagine it making an amazing film. Taishi was easily my favourite character, a cranky, tired warrior, now stuck with the pampered and not remotely prepared prophesied hero, that every one wants dead. Including the hilarious assassin Qisami and the irritated beyond belief Sali.

Inspired by the author’s love of martial arts, wuxia movies and his Taiwanese heritage, this is filled with brilliant one on one fights and incredible stunts, Taishi is a windwhisper and can manipulate air currents to aid her in battle, Sali carries an ingenious tongue, part whip, part sword, Qisami loves her vicious knives.

Throw in a trainee doctor, a map maker’s daughter, a war monk and some half trained fighters and you have a gang of misfits around Jian, the not exactly a hero. But somehow they just have to keep him alive, something about destiny.

Bits of this honestly made me laugh out loud, there’s some incredible fight scenes, there’s loads of banter, a city in a mine shaft, temples, terrifying hyena like creatures, a desert called the Sand Snake and a Grass Sea. The imagery is incredible. And so vividly brought to life, I could imagine the crowded city of Jiayi where much of the story takes place easily, from the descriptions.

Book one of a new series and it ends with so many loose threads that will hopefully be picked up in the next book, leaving me (and you) eagerly awaiting it. Exciting.

Meet Grim Reaper #2497. Behind on his work, he must complete his quota of thirty Random Deaths or face termination in the worst way. Faced with an insurmountable task and very little time to complete it, Reaper #2497 struggles to hang on to the one thing he’s not supposed to have – his humanity.

Amazon (Canada) Amazon US Amazon UK

Goodreads

Sarah McKnight has been writing stories since she could pick up a pencil, and it often got her in trouble during math class. After a brief stint teaching English to unruly middle schoolers in Japan, she decided she wasn’t going to put off her dream of becoming a writer any longer and set to work. With several novels in the making, she hopes to tackle issues such as anxiety, depression, and letting go of the past – with a little humor sprinkled in, too. A St. Louis native, she currently lives in Pennsylvania with her wonderful husband and three cats. You can find her on Twitter @mcknight_writes and http://www.sarahmcknightwrites.com.

My thoughts: a Reaper is someone who, for whatever reason, committed murder while alive and is now fated to collect the souls of the dying. Oh, plus 30 random deaths that they have to pick themselves. Talk about a moral dilemma. At least it is for Reaper #2497, formerly known as Steve. He’s not a cold blooded killer, and is having trouble making his monthly 30. Especially after meeting Heather, a living person who can see and speak to him.

He tries, with plenty of black humour, to pick 30 fairly awful humans or at least ones with only a few years left to live. Should a Reaper feel guilt? Well Steve does. And that’s not going to end well. He can’t find a loophole or an answer to his problem anywhere at Reaper HQ and the Big Boss is getting cross with him. What’s a Reaper to do?

Blackly comic and smart, this is an entertaining read that asks a pretty pertinent question – could you follow an order blindly like Reapers are supposed to?

Blog Tour: The First Cut – Val Penny

It’s hard to escape a brutal past.

A vicious killer is on the loose .
Victims targeted include an academic and members of Edinburgh’s high society.

When the Murder Investigation Team find out that the killer is connected to her past, DS Jane Renwick is banished to the side-lines and forced to look on as the manhunt ramps up at a ferocious pace.

Has someone from Jane’s birth family returned to haunt her?
Is one of her relatives involved?

Where will the killer strike next?

This gripping police procedural is set in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The exciting novel is the first in Val Penny’s new series of Scottish thrillers.

Val Penny has an Llb degree from Edinburgh University and her MSc from Napier University. She has had many jobs including hairdresser, waitress, banker, azalea farmer and lecturer but has not yet achieved either of her childhood dreams of being a ballerina or owning a candy store.

Until those dreams come true, she has turned her hand to writing poetry, short stories, nonfiction, and novels.

Val is an American author living in SW Scotland. She has two adult daughters of whom she is justly proud and lives with her husband and their cat.

Twitter Instagram Facebook Website

My thoughts: this was a really clever, gripping police procedural. Sidelined after a familial DNA match, DS Jane Renwick won’t just go home and twiddle her thumbs, she’s determined to find out whether her estranged brothers are out there – and which one of them’s a killer. She’s also picked up a stalker, is he her brother too?

The rest of the team are hard at work, looking for connections between the victims, trying to work out how the killer picked them and why, so they can stop him. Armed with Jane’s information, they’re also looking for her brothers. All three might be killers – their jobs suggest as much – as long as they’ve got the right Smiths!

I liked the characters of Jane and Rachael, their friends and colleagues, the way that even amidst terrible crimes they find time to banter and joke, stop for fish and chips, but always with half a mind on the investigation. I think this could be a really great series.

What if crying out for help made you a target?

Within hours of arriving in Montego Bay, Eddie Barrow and his friend Corey Stephenson witness a gruesome murder outside a bar. When the victim’s sister reaches out for help, they learn of machinations to conceal foreign corporate corruption and a series of horrific sex crimes. However, Barrow and Stephenson’s commitment to solving the case is put to the test once they find themselves in the crosshairs of a ruthless criminal network—one that extends beyond the shores of Jamaica.

If you enjoy heart-pounding thrillers with conspiracies, martial arts, sex, betrayal, and revenge, then you don’t need to look any further and see why these are among the best mystery thriller books of all time.

Website Facebook Twitter Instagram

My thoughts: this was really good, it hooked me right from the start as Eddie and Corey get involved in the terrible death of a young gay man in Jamaica. They’re there on Eddie’s book tour but after witnessing the crime, and seeing the disinterest of the police, they can’t help but look into it. The victim’s sister shows up at the book signing and Eddie promises to help.

Unfortunately Dwayne’s tragic death is part of something much bigger, a conspiracy that crosses oceans and far more complex than the two men originally think. There’s other terrible crimes all tangled up in it too, as they pursue another witness with a sad past.

Corruption, child abuse, homophobia, intellectual property theft, police looking the other way, it’s all in there. Along the way there are some powerful allies to go along with the dangerous enemies they’ve made. Eddie and Corey put their lives on the line for the truth.

My thoughts: this was great fun, as Caelum and his friends set out to rescue Brigid from the evil siren goddess Cliodhna. Along the way they are aided by a mysterious witch and two kind, brave people. Caelum is wanted for the murder of his father, a just death but not according to his father’s allies. They must also protect the orphanage, where the children they rescued are living.

Luckily both Caelum’s crew and the syrens are fierce and brave, they won’t let anything happen to those they care about. So they prepare to defend each other and the children.

It’s a fast moving story, lots of running headlong into danger, but sometimes you have to!

About the Author

James T. Hogg is the pseudonym of one of the most prominent New York City real estate attorneys. As a real-life attorney he has published two non-fiction books about real estate and business, one of which was a Wall Street Journal best seller.

Girl With a Knife is his first novel, based on a story he told many times to his now-grown children. His goal was to create a story that the reader simply cannot put down, even when it is midnight and the reader needs to sleep.

In this novel, Hogg has created a world where girls and women of all cultures are equal or superior to the male characters around them, an epic tale that will appeal to women and men of all ages.

James T. Hogg

My thoughts: this is an interesting and intense story of injustice and struggle, set when the United States was still young and expanding. Moving back and forth between two narratives – the assault on Chloe and that of a young Native American woman.

Chloe is violently attacked by the sons of a prominent family in their small town, a family that will do anything to stay in power. Her sister Faythe will do anything to right this terrible wrong.

Nununyi is a young Native woman, injured in a fight with white men. Rescued by one of these men, who wants a different life, he nurses her back to health and they become a couple. She is drawn to her tribe and her childhood sweetheart, who thinks she’s dead.

Both women will have to overcome the prejudices and ignorance of the age, having to be tougher than many of the men around them. As the first part of this story ends, Faythe’s father is accused of a crime, and it will be up to her to help him.

A Cursed Throne (Children of the Fallen #1)

Publication Date: February 27th, 2023

Genre: Why Choose/ Dark Fantasy Romance

I am my mother’s daughter. Princess, born to an angel. Who also happens to be The Queen of Hell, and Leader of the Legion, the group of fallen angels that divided Heaven.

But I am also my father’s progeny. Daughter of a daemon. Sired when his blood was half mortal after the Devil shot him and tried to claim my mother.

The spirit of Heaven, fires of Hell, and blood of mankind runs through my veins, along with the destiny to either rule or destroy those kingdoms. The crown I was born with is heavy. My powers, beyond that which created the universe. But neither have ever felt a burden thanks to Declan, Kai, and Luca.

For as long as I can remember it’s been the four of us. One mortal, two children of the Fallen, and an heir like no other. Bound by an unconventional childhood, we were best friends, and they were my world. But in the blink of an eye they were gone, cutting me out of their life as if I never mattered at all.

So I did what I had to do. I left them, and our shared world behind, and started a new one. Keeping their three traitorous hearts, far from my own.

It’s been three years since the last time we saw each other, and I haven’t forgotten or forgiven. It’s time to come home and get even.

Angel, daemon, mortal…the blood of all three is in me. I am the heir of each bloodline. But when it comes to power, there is none greater than a heart scorned.

Spicy Teaser 2

A Cursed Throne is a why-choose romance, meaning the main female character gains multiple love interests over the course of the series. It is the first book of three in the second phase of the After the Fall Universe. It is not necessary to read phase one, but highly recommended. This series has dark elements and themes that may be triggering for some readers, including strong language and sexual situations.
