Hamilton Book Tag Post

I’ve seen this pop up on a few blogs recently and considering I’ve been watching it (repeatedly) on Disney + like everyone else, I thought why not.

💥The Room Where It Happened – a book world you’d put yourself in

💜I read a lot of books set in worlds where things are pretty grim it seems but maybe the world of The Strangeways Travel Agency – I love the idea of slipping between worlds in magical suitcases.

💥The Schulyer Sisters – an underrated female character

💜Hazel Wong of the Wells & Wong Detective Agency series – Daisy gets all the credit with her quick wits and star power but it’s Hazel who backs her every move and is often the smarter one in the long run.

💥My Shot – a character that goes after what they want and doesn’t let anyone stop them

💜Alanna of Trebond in the Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce. She wants to be a knight and lets nothing, not even her gender, stop her. When I need a boost of confidence I say to myself “Be more Alanna”.

💥Stay Alive – a character you wish was still alive

💜Granny Weatherwax – her death scene in The Shepherd’s Crown, so soon after Terry Pratchett’s own, broke me in ways I still don’t fully know how to handle. I can’t bring myself to re-read the book.

💥Burn – the most heartbreaking end to a relationship you’ve ever read

💜When Jack dies in Nancy Turner’s These Is My Words. The love story between him and Sarah is the backbone of the book and his death, just as they’re so happy, was awful.

💥You’ll Be Back – sassiest villain

💜the plague – in multiple books this awful disease pops back to ruin lives, much as it really did in the non-fictional world. And nothing seems to be able to keep it down. Most recently for me in Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell, in which Agnes/Anne Shakespeare’s heart gets utterly broken by her son’s terrible death. Stupid plague.

💥The Reynolds Pamphlet – a twist you didn’t see coming

💜I used to be really good at spotting the twist in many whodunnits but recently writers have been getting better at confounding me. However, Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None is still the original so-gripping-I-could-not-go-to-sleep-until-I-knew-who-the-murderer-was book.

💥Non Stop – a series you marathoned

💜Jodi Taylor’s Chronicles of St Mary’s and I almost died laughing doing it. Those books are so clever and funny.

💥Satisfied – favourite book with multiple POVs

💜I very much enjoyed Jade City and Jade War by Fonda Lee with the different members of the Kaul family sharing their perspectives. It gives you a real sense of the events from every angle that makes it so much richer.

💥Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story – a book/series you feel will be remembered for all time

💜Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. The fact that people are quoting bits from The Night Watch (a truly excellent book) regarding police brutality in discussions about Black Lives Matter shows how much it’s part of our culture already.

💥Helpless – a relationship you were pulling for from the beginning

💜Nick and Charlie in the Heartstopper series. I love them.

💥Ten Duel Commandments – favourite fight scene

💜the utterly ridiculous ones in Bloodlust & Bonnets, which features the most hilarious version of Lord Byron (he of mad, bad & dangerous to know fame) ever.

💥Say No To This – guilty pleasure read

💜I don’t believe pleasure should be guilty but the Redwall Abbey books are delightful even now.

💥What Comes Next – a series you wish was longer

💜The Daevabad series by S.K Chakraborty – 3 books, 3 books only! Not enough. Although they are magnificent and Empire of Gold is *chef’s kiss*

💥What’d I Miss – book/series you were late to reading

💜The Shadowhunter books – I only started reading them last year and although they’re not exactly high literature (thank goodness) they’re fun and silly and enjoyable.

So there you go, those are my picks. Now I have to go listen to the Hamilton soundtrack nine million more times. Over to you.

blogging, ramblings, tag posts

The Blogger Tag

I saw this on Naomi’s blog a while ago and lost it in my drafts. I love a tag post – it’s a great way to tell your readers a bit more about yourself.

1.       How Tall Are You?

5ft 8in – so just above average for a woman

2.       Do You Have A Hidden Talent? If So, What?

I can pick things up with my toes – like pencils or paintbrushes when I was a kid, it’s useful if I drop something.

3.       What’s Your Biggest Blog-Related Pet Peeve?

The snide bitchiness that goes on and the accusations of stealing people’s ideas – it’s not always plagiarism. Sometimes it’s genuinely being inspired by a post. Maybe just say “this post was inspired by ….” or something.

4.       What’s Your Biggest Non-Blog Related Pet Peeve?

People who walk really slowly in the middle of the pavement so you can’t walk around them. Living in London this is a daily nightmare.

5.       What’s Your Favourite Song?

It changes depending on my mood, but Nina Simone singing “I think it’s gonna rain today” is always on the list.

6.       What’s Your Favourite Social Media Website?

I do love the twitters (HT Marian Keyes)

7.       What’s Your Favourite Way To Spend Your Free Time When You’re Alone?

Reading and eating popcorn, or taking a much needed nap. I do love a nap.

8.       What’s Your Favourite Junk Food?

Probably salted popcorn with Galaxy counters or chocolate buttons chucked in there so you get the salty and the chocolatey – oh so good.

9.       Do You Have A Pet Or Pets? If So, What Kind And What Are Their Names?

Currently we have four rats, all girls, Izzie who is a pink eyed white and about 2, then 3 little cheeky ratscallions – Rosie Posie, Dumbo (Little D) and Ninja who are sisters and about 8 weeks old, they’re hooded, dumbo rex rats, so they have different markings, really soft fur, big round ears and curly whiskers.

10.   What’s Your Favourite Fiction And Non-Fiction Books?

This could be a really long list – I have so many top reads, but I will go with These Is My Words by Nancy Turner as I love this book so much, and recommend Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis (from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers) as my favourite non-fiction biographical book as it is so compelling a read I literally read it in one sitting. Otherwise Prisoners of Geography is one of the most interesting non-fiction books I’ve ever read.

11.   What’s Your Favourite Beauty Product Or Tool?

I really do like a good blending sponge and my Spectrum Collection brushes are pretty excellent. Product wise I am a big fan of Soap & Glory’s primer and Make Up Revolution’s setting spray, both mean that my make up looks good and stays put.

12.   When Were You Last Embarrassed? What Happened?

I trod on the  back of my friend’s boot the other day, she was really nice about it but I need to watch where I put my clown feet.

13.   If You Could Only Drink One Beverage (Besides Water) For The Rest Of Your Life, What Would It Be?

Diet Coke – my one vice apart from buying takeaways instead of cooking too often…

14.   What’s Your Favourite Movie?

Much like the book question this contains multitudes – Empire Records, The Princess Bride, My Neighbour Totoro, Rent, Disney’s Hercules, the list goes on…

15.   What Was Your Favourite Lesson In School And Why?

Drama because Mr Jones was a fab teacher, and I thought I wanted to act. I now know I’d be better off as a Stage Manager, and that one day I will write a play.

16.   If You Could Live Anywhere In The World, Where Would You Live?

There’s an island in the Venetian lagoon that hardly anyone lives on – that would suit my hermit nature down to a tee.

17.   PC Or Mac?

I like the look of Macbooks but I lack the resources to own one. Mostly I use my dying laptop.

18.   Last Romantic Gesture From A Crush, Date, Boy/Girlfriend, Spouse? (Or Kind Gesture From A Friend)

My fiancé, bless him, isn’t the romantic sort really, but he bought me some biscuits while I was stuck at home sick in a bid to cheer me up.

19.   Favourite Celebrity?

Not really into celebrity as such – there’s some pretty cool writers out there I’ve met and Sarah Millican seems like she’s pretty awesome.

20.   What Blogger Do You Secretly Want To Be Best Friends With?

George from Fuller Figure Fuller Bust – who is incredibly lovely (we got our first rats from her) and just seems to be someone who’s really fun to hang out with.

21.   Who Is Your Biggest Inspiration?

My Grandad – left school at 13 to start working, was in the RAF, lost his father at 19, first wife died at 22, moved to London shortly after, met my Nan, married her, adopted her children (my mum and aunt), raised his family, worked like crazy, ran his own company, retired and sold it, got bored so went and got another job, has travelled all over the place, and now takes care of Nanny who is very poorly, despite being 86 with 2 new knees, 2 pacemakers and hearing aids. He’s pretty cool and we swap thrillers.

22.   What Is Your Favourite Blog To Read?

Vix Meldrew is hilarious and insightful. I also loved Tara from Cattitude & Co but she’s taking a break from blogging right now.

23.   What Is Your Favourite High Street Shop?

Waterstones or Superdrug probably – books and skincare are pretty much all I buy these days.

24.   Are You In Education Or Do You Work?

I work for a charity, but even when I was a student (oh I miss those days) I worked as well so it feels like I’ve been working forever.

books, fun stuff, tag posts

Rapid Fire Book tag

E-book or physical book? – Physical, let’s get physical.

Paperback or hardback? – both, although paperbacks hurt less when you drop them on your face.

Online or in-store book shopping? Book shops are my crack but I do use the old interwebs as there are no bookshops near me (and Smiths doesn’t count).

Trilogies or series? – Depends on the book, some writers need a series to develop the story, others not so much.

Heroes or Villians? – unreliable narrators.

A book you want everyone to read? – Girls on Fire by Robin Wasserman.  Damn does she perfectly capture teenage girls and their crazy.

Recommend an underrated author? – Tamora Pierce. Go, read everything she’s written. Do it now.

The last book you finished? – Too Close for Comfort – not the best thriller I’ve read but ok.

Weirdest thing you’ve used as a bookmark? – A dollar bill.

Used books: Yes or no? – yes.

Top three favourite genres? – Fantasy, crime thriller, literary fiction.

Borrow or buy? – these days buy, but only because my library card won’t let me in and the librarians are now all robots.

Character or plot? – you need both.

Long or short books? – totally depends on the story.

Name the first three books you think of – Danny the Champion of the World- Roald Dahl, The Bees – , The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde – Robert Louis Stephenson.

Books that make you laugh or cry? – Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books – I can’t read them anywhere public, I laugh until I cry.

Our world or fictional? – Fictional – our world is a mess and I need an escape.

Audiobooks: yes or no? – I have an Audible account, I should really use it more…

Do you ever judge a book by its cover? – of course, we all do, whatever we claim.

Book to movie or book to tv? – No.  Although Series of Unfortunate Events the series trumps the movie.

A movie or tv show that you preferred to the book? – this has not happened.

Series or standalones? – depends on my mood.

Please join in and let me know in the comments if you’re playing.

Seven Deadly Sins Tag

The lovely Karen of Confetti and Curls shared this tag post and I thought ‘why not’. Feel free to join in on your blog too.

GREED: What is your most inexpensive beauty item? What is your most expensive?

Cheapest – my MUA blusher in Cupcake – it’s only a squid!

Most expensive – my current Lush moisturiser – over thirty quid but it is gorgeous.

WRATH: What beauty products do you have a love/hate relationship with? What product has been the hardest to get?

Eye liner – it never looks even, just utterly awful.

I have pale, fussy skin and getting the right foundation is hard, too many are orange or too dark. I found a perfect one, it’s no longer produced.

GLUTTONY: What are your most delicious beauty products?

Lush Cupcake facemask or Bubblegum lip scrub.

SLOTH: What beauty product do you neglect, due to laziness?

Toner – I can’t work out if it’s still a thing or if I need it.

PRIDE: What beauty product gives you the most self confidence?

A good highlighter that makes me look all glowy and healthy.

LUST: What attributes do you find most attractive in the opposite sex?

Relevance to make up? Anyway, humour, a good smile and excellent personal hygiene.

ENVY: What items would you most like to receive as a gift?

One of those slightly too pricey Urban Decay palettes – I won’t buy them for myself.

Summer Lovin’ Tag

The lovely Sal of Ummbaby fame did this tag post, so I swiped it.

💄Favourite Lip Colour – Revlon’s Ultra HD Matte in Devotion, real like it.

books, fun stuff

PokemonGo Reading Tag

Stacey at Pretty Books did this fun tag, combining books with everyone’s current obsession – Pokemon Go!

The first I read for myself was a Beatrix Potter book of rhymes – I was three. I have no real memory of this, just what my Mum said. My favourite book growing up was Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, which sparked a love of horses.

Alice in Wonderland – it’s a strange, magical book that I’ll never tire off because there’s so much to unpack.

Harry Potter fans look away now!

I can’t bear that series- I have my reasons and if you’d like to discuss them, please email me at

I don’t know about love but I quite liked The Magicians by Lev Grossman – despite it’s obvious influences and many references to a Narnia-like land.

Nothing phases me – I have read my way through some enormous books and series’.

I read Red Hot Chili Peppers’ lead singer Anthony Kiedis’ autobiography Scar Tissue in one sitting, his life was so gripping and the writing hooked me in.

Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None – gripping.

Erm, I am rather invested in Claire and Jamie in the Outlander books at the moment, and waiting for the next one.

From an academic perspective I am quite interested in the un/authorised sequels of classic children’s novels like Peter Pan and The Wind in the Willows.

The Gentlemen Bastard sequence by Scott Lynch is fabulous and seriously underrated. I thought that it would be just another fantasy series but it’s a cracking read – bring on book 4.

Although I’ve read them now, the hype around The Raven Boys and its sequels, was pretty heavy. But then I started reading them and was hooked.

The Discworld series’ collector editions are pretty lovely and I certainly wouldn’t mind having them on my shelves.

Erm, I don’t know – if someone could suggest an upcoming release they think I’d enjoy – please do.

Anything Neil Gaiman or Tamora Pierce write – as far as I’m concerned they’re both genuises.

I waited five years for The Republic of Thieves to finally be published – don’t do it to me again Scott Lynch.

The final ever book written by Terry Pratchett will be released later this year and that’s pretty exciting and a little sad.

If you’d like to do this tag, go for it. It was quite fun and gave me an opportunity to think about the books I’ve read over the years.
