✨ Secret Magic

✨ Everything You Thought You Knew was a Lie

Larissa’s inability to kill is a disgrace to her absent mother, Sword Matriarch of the Fair Lady’s order, a sisterhood whose purpose is to hunt down sorcerers corrupted by the Evercry and slay them. But Larissa hides an even more sinful secret: she is drawn toward magic, and it grows stronger in her every day.

Larissa keeps a stranglehold on her gift until the day of her graduation test, when her misuse of magic leads her to failure. Prepared to be cast out of the sisterhood, she is instead brought into the scorned caste of the darkkins, those who study and wield magic in the fight against the Evercry. In their halls she discovers that her proclivity for magic makes her powerful, and a little dangerous.

Gone for years, her mother suddenly sends word that she needs help to defeat a formidable sorcerer, help only Larissa can give. Larissa will do anything to save her mother, even travel with the girl who bullied her all through school. But as they battle monsters and mercenaries, Larissa must grapple with dark truths about the sisterhood and her heritage, and decide who she can really trust with her mother’s fate…and her own.

Blog Tour: Foxfire – Rowan Hill

FoxFire copy

We’re celebrating the release of Foxfire this week, a suspenseful horror by Rowan Hill!

Ebook cover

Foxfire

Publication Date: October 10, 2023

Genre: Horror/ Suspense/ Paranormal

In a remote Finnish resort, a group of potential investors gather to enjoy the Arctic beauty and the mesmeric Northern lights. But many of the guests aren’t who they appear to be, and everyone is hiding something–from the gaudy Americans to the adventurous German and Australian couple to the quiet Yakuza and his former Geisha wife.

Owner Mattais and his skeptical daughter, Aino, have ignored family legends, dismissing the warnings of honoring their ancient forest as silly, old-fashioned traditions. But when the guests start to be picked off one by one, their blood soaked in the snow, the old tales don’t seem so far-fetched anymore. A spectre haunts the forest and the survivors must decipher who–or what–is taking revenge.

“…FOXFIRE combines all the best elements of a tense, well-paced thriller with compelling folklore and horror, all in the stark, deadly and glittering setting of the frozen north…. “

About the Author

Rowan Hill is an Australian/ American author who has lived a little bit of everywhere. She primarily writes horror in isolated environments and feels everything is better with a creature feature. Self described as an 80s child, Rowan loves a good synth soundtrack and her hobbies include hiking mountains and traveling to far off places that she probably shouldn’t. She can be found on social media as @writerrowanhill or her website of the same name.

Rowan Hill

My thoughts: this was a suitably creepy creature feature, set in the remote Finnish forests of the Arctic.

Invited to explore an investment opportunity, in the form of a hotel with unusual glass igloos to sleep in, a group of disparate people – with previous connections, it turns out, assemble. The Aurora Borealis is high in the sky as something starts killing off the guests.

Is there an unnatural force in the forest, or is the killer among the group? If it is something other than human, what does it want?

Aino has come home to help her dad sell his hotel to the investors but she doesn’t really want to be there. Disconnected from the land her grandfather tried to teach her to love, she isn’t particularly engaged with things. But as it all starts to go horribly, terribly wrong, only she can stop this.

A mix of folklore and monster moments, as the bodies add up and the blood soaks into the snow, can Aino make it out of the forest and save the guests?

Where Did the Wind Go?
Genre: YA Horror
Ages: 14 – 18

With the help of the newly formed Ghoul Gang, self-proclaimed ghost hunter Simon Woo soon learns that his new town of Ravenswood, North Carolina, is riddled with ghouls. But something even more nightmarish is lurking within the woods. And it has its eyes on Simon.

After moving with his family, Simon discovers that his new town is better fitting for a survivor in a horror movie rather than a junior in high school. He quickly befriends two other outsiders—Miles, the equally horror-obsessed new kid from New York City, and Riley, the resident goth girl with a secret.

As the brutal murders continue, the Ghoul Gang must discover the truth behind the ghoul in the woods in order to save Simon from becoming the entity’s new host.

Blog Tour: Last Girls Standing – Jennifer Dugan

In this queer YA psychological thriller from the author of Some Girls Do and Hot Dog Girl, the sole surviving counselors of a summer camp massacre search to uncover the truth of what happened that fateful night, but what they find out might just get them killed.

Sloan and Cherry. Cherry and Sloan. They met only a few days before masked men with machetes attacked the summer camp where they worked, a massacre that left the rest of their fellow counselors dead. Now, months later, the two are inseparable, their traumatic experience bonding them in ways no one else can understand.

But as new evidence comes to light and Sloan learns more about the motives behind the ritual killing that brought them together, she begins to suspect that her girlfriend may be more than just a survivor―she may actually have been a part of it. Cherry tries to reassure her, but Sloan only becomes more distraught. Is this gaslighting or reality? Is Cherry a victim or a perpetrator? Is Sloan confused, or is she seeing things clearly for the very first time? Against all odds, Sloan survived that hot summer night. But will she survive what comes next?

Jennifer Dugan is a writer, a geek, and a romantic who writes the kinds of stories she wishes she’d had growing up. She’s the author of the graphic novel Coven, as well as the young adult novels Melt With You, Some Girls Do, Verona Comics, and Hot Dog Girl, which was called “a great, fizzy rom-com” by Entertainment Weekly and “one of the best reads of the year, hands down” by Paste magazine. She lives in upstate New York with her family, their dog, a strange kitten who enjoys wearing sweaters, and an evil cat who is no doubt planning to take over the world.

My thoughts: Surviving a terrible crime, the murder of multiple camp counsellors at the camp where they were due to work has left Sloan and Cherry with emotional, and physical, scars. Especially Sloan. Her work with a hypnotherapist is bringing confusing memories of the events out and she’s not sure who to trust anymore.

Is Cherry, her fellow final girl, involved with the dangerous cult that killed everyone else and would have killed them too? Is Cherry’s mum? And what did Sloan’s biological parents have to do with it, if anything?

As Sloan starts to spiral, unable to trust her family, her friends, Cherry, diving into the cult’s deranged beliefs and theories, she starts to believe there’s something else going on.

A startling and shocking depiction of PTSD, survivor’s guilt and the mental impact of living a life with too many questions and not enough answers.

Blog Tour: The Girls in the Cabin – Caleb Stevens

AN UNPUTDOWNABLE PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER WITH A STUNNING FINAL TWIST.

They find a cabin in the woods and think they’re finally safe. But little do they know, the nightmare is just beginning.

This camping trip is Chris’s last chance to keep his family together. His wife is gone and, after what he did, his daughters aren’t speaking to him. But things go wrong as soon as they get to the mountains.

Kayla is still so pissed at him, and Emma runs off into the woods. By the time they find her, she’s broken her ankle and there’s a bad storm rolling in. They need shelter, fast.

They think they’ve found sanctuary when they come across an old farmstead. The woman inside welcomes them in out of the howling blizzard and straps up Emma’s ankle.

But the phone lines are down. The roads are blocked. And the woman in the cabin is not what she seems . . .

Will Chris and his daughters survive the night?

Set in the stunning wilderness of the Colorado Flat Tops, this addictive thriller packed with shocking twists will make you question everything you think you know about family.

An utterly breathtaking thriller perfect for fans of Harlen Coben, Gregg Olsen, Mary Kubica, Lisa Jackson and Stephen King’s Misery .

My thoughts: this is why I don’t go camping anymore, there’s some terrible, scary people living in the middle of nowhere! Chris and his daughters are mourning the death of their wife & mother, when they take a camping trip in Colorado.

After a terrible accident they find shelter in a local homestead. Clara seems kind, offering them a place to stay as a snowstorm sets in. But there’s something not right about her and her brain damaged son Billy. Who is Miss Sydney?

Trapped in the house with no working phone lines and an increasingly unhinged situation, Chris, Kayla and Emma will have to fight to survive.

This was a horror film in a book, honestly it was so dark and shocking. Clara’s life was horrendous and how she coped was understandable – to a point. But what Chris and his daughters go through really had my heart in my throat. Billy too, he’s such a gentle, innocent soul and he suffers for it. The ending thankfully saved it from being too horrific, but this wasn’t a book I could have read just before bed – nightmare fuel.

Inheritance often comes with strings attached, but rarely are they as tangled as those hanging over High Hearth.

When Eudora Fellowes learns she’s the sole heir of her estranged great-aunt’s seaside manor, she believes it will be the peaceful escape she’s longed for. What awaits, however, is a dark legacy shrouded in half a century of secrets, and it doesn’t take long before Eudora realizes she’s not the only one to call High Hearth home.

My thoughts: the premise of this book really intrigued me, a house full of ghosts, a woman with two huge dogs (called Cerberus and Black Shuck – both hellhounds of a sort) and the battle to rid the house of its wrathful spirits.

Eudora is a bit strange herself, and doesn’t actually seem hugely perturbed by the unquiet dead lingering in the house or the fact her great-aunt is deeply unpleasant in death as she was in life.

But rather than doing what I’d do, burn the damn place down, salt the earth and never step foot there again, Eudora is determined to take control and stop the terrifying visions and poltergeists of the house from destroying her.

A strange, twisted tale of ghosts, the terrible things people can do and one peculiar woman with her two hounds.

The Broken Darkness

Publication Date: January 26th, 2023

Genre: Dark Fiction/ Spec Fiction/ Short Story Collection

Publisher: Gorgon Blood Press

In her debut collection, Theresa Braun explores the inner workings of the human heart and what it is we most desire—forgiveness, acceptance, love, fame, or merely to escape who we really are. Whether we are battling ghosts, demons, mythical monsters, the past, or other dimensions, we are really facing the deepest parts of ourselves. These thirteen tales of horror and dark fantasy may appear to be a matter of good versus evil, but they are all a reflection of the hidden corners of the soul that are often shades of broken darkness. The characters in these stories must face their inner and outer terrors, or else suffer the consequences.

Her short works have appeared in The Horror Zine, Sirens Call, Hardened Hearts, and Best Indie Speculative Fiction: November 2018, Double Barrel Horror (Volume 3) and Emporium of Superstition.

My thoughts: these short stories are sinister and creepy, dark and compelling. From ghosts who keep reliving the moments of their deaths, to haunted places, things that go bump in the night, vampires and other sinister goings on, there’s something for every horror fan here. And of course, there’s exactly 13 tales, fitting perfectly into the theme of the book as a whole. Satisfying chilling.
