Book Preview: What Falls Between the Cracks – Robert Scragg

For a debut novel this is very accomplished, and in an amusing twist is set in and around my neck of the woods, with familiar places popping up as I read.

A frozen hand is found in an abandoned flat, whose is it and how did it end up there? DI Jake Porter and DS Nick Styles match the DNA to a woman who had been missing for 30 years. What happened to her?

A simple investigation turns into a knotty and dangerous case, pitting the police against a gang of criminals and members of their own force.

I really enjoyed this, I like a good, complex crime thriller and this delivered. Pacey, well written, fully fledged out characters, the rest of this proposed series should be interesting.
The hardback isn’t out till April next year but if this is your sort of read I recommend putting it on your tbr list now.

Book Preview: We Were The Lucky Ones – Georgia Hunter

Based on the true story of the author’s family, this amazing, heartbreaking story of one family’s survival amidst the horrors of the Second World War and Holocaust.

The Kurc family live peacefully in Poland, as they have done for generations amongst until war breaks out. Their Jewish faith condemns them to the terrors of a continent torn apart.

There are some real heart wrenching moments, and the fact that the author’s relatives actually lived this story is just incredible, they are so brave and strong and endure so much. It’s not really a surprise Hunter’s grandfather never spoke about his past.

I loved this book, it really drew me into the family, each member drawn so beautifully, so alive on the page.

The book is published in the UK on the 21st of September, which gives you just enough time to pre-order it from your preferred purveyor of books.

Book Preview: Greatest Hits – Laura Barnett

Written by the author of The Versions of  Us, Laura Barnett, Greatest Hits is the story of Cass Wheeler a rock star in the form of a Joni Mitchell or Stevie Nicks. Her career has been in decline for a while and she spends her days mourning a tragic loss tucked away on her secluded farm.
Her record label wants to release a greatest hits collection and this sparks Cass on a mission of memory – of her parents, her former band, and her past.

Interspersed between the chapters of Cass’ life are her songs, actually written by singer-songwriter Kathryn Hughes especially for the book.

Interestingly the two writers will be releasing an album of these songs to coincide with the book’s release in June this year.

I really liked this book, it has great emotional writing and I found Cass very intriguing. At times there were very sad moments and I’m not ashamed to say I cried a little – really good writing hooks your feelings like nothing else.

The book isn’t out until June 15th, which gives you loads of time to put it on your wishlist.
