Dragons once led our people across the wastelands, away from storms, and toward hunting grounds.’

That’s what the elders say, but eleven-year-old Akrist has squinted at empty skies his whole life. The dragons have abandoned them, and it’s Akrist’s fault. He’s cursed. Like every other firstborn son, he has inherited the sins of his ancestors. In his camp, he’s the only eldest boy left. Something happened to the others.

Something terrible.

When Akrist befriends Tanar, an eldest boy from another tribe, he discovers the awful truth: they’re being raised as sacrifices to appease the Goddess and win back her dragons. The ritual happens when the dual moons eclipse. Escape is the only option, but Akrist was never taught to hunt or survive the wastelands alone. Time is running out, and he has to do something before the moons touch.

At a young age, Shelly Campbell wanted to be an air show pilot or a pirate, possibly a dragon and definitely a writer and artist. She’s piloted a Cessna 172 through spins and stalls, and sailed up the east coast on a tall ship barque—mostly without projectile vomiting. In the end, Shelly found writing fantasy and drawing dragons to be so much easier on the stomach.

Shelly’s tales are speculative fiction, tending toward literary with dollops of oddity. She enjoys the challenge of exploring new techniques and subject matter, and strives to embed inspiring stories in her writing.

Blog Tour: Hexed – Lisa Wakely

After sixteen-year-old Harriet Flynn trips over an ancient gravestone etched with strange markings in a seventeenth-century holiday village and reads the inscription, she and her friends are alarmed to wake up with supernatural powers.

Having magical abilities is fun at first, but when a series of accidents cause the group to become frightened, Harriet becomes determined to find out what’s going on.

While investigating the history of the gravestone they came across that night, Harriet realises she has unwittingly awakened a centuries-old, deadly curse and she is the only one who can put an end to it – and she has less than a day.

With time running out, Harriet must find the true magic key, to save herself and the ones she loves.

Lisa Wakely is a writer, performer and radio presenter from Essex born to an Anglo-Indian mother and Anglo-Burmese father. She has been writing since she was twelve years old, after spending most of her evenings reading stories from the school library. Lisa lives in Colchester with her husband, dog and a cat.

She enjoys engaging in heart-pumping activities such as skydiving and abseiling, all in the pursuit of charity. Her passion for writing and teaching performing arts is matched only by her boundless energy and unwavering determination. Her time working as a Guest Host at Madame Tussauds London really gave her a taste of what life at an entertainment attraction was like.

Very much how it comes across in Hexed – minus the magic and 17th century madness!

My thoughts: as a teenager my friends and I did occasionally wander through the various local church yards and cemeteries, but luckily never woke anything up! Harriet accidentally seems to have stirred up the ghost of a 17th Century woman executed as a witch. And she might actually have been one!

Passing on her powers and a warning to Harriet, she sets the teenager and her friends on a mission, but time is of the essence and there isn’t much of it.

Only by helping each other and working together can Harriet and her friends break the curse and stop Silas from destroying everything.

It’s a twisted, creepy story with lots of action and adventure, all in costume as they recreate the 17th Century village for a Halloween festival.

There’s just one rule: He doesn’t kill people.

All Ren wants to do is stop a serial killer, clear his name, and protect the people he cares about.

To do that, he’ll have to pull one more high-stakes heist— And steal the proof he needs from the very people who want to catch him.

Blog Tour: The Boatmore Butcher – L. Stephenson

Three paramedics are drawn into the mystery of a bizarre spree unfolding on a quiet island town.

Devastated by the loss of his son, Liam Price, must hold it together whilst leading his team against a killer who finds new and twisted ways to prevent them from saving the lives of their victims.

But one serious mistake puts them and everyone they love in grave danger.

As the island starts to slip into hysteria, our villain goes to gruesome lengths to keep their identity a secret.

Able to hide in plain sight, the killer is out for revenge as they close in on their prey.

Can they escape the wrath of the Boatmore Butcher?

L. Stephenson has been telling stories of killers and boogeymen to his friends and writing them on his computer since the summer before he began high school. A university degree in Film & TV Screenwriting, a handful of anthologies and a novella later, and not much has changed, it seems!

Stephenson’s first short story was published as part of a Halloween-themed collection by Dark Ink back in 2018. Nearly five years later, terror just came full circle as the author has returned home to Dark Ink to release his debut slasher novel, The Boatmore Butcher.

Instagram

My thoughts: if I lived on this island, where people keep getting brutally murdered, I’d leave. The body count is very high and since the killer is very good at framing others for his crimes, moving far away is the best plan.

Brutal, bloody, but very creative, this butcher knows what he’s doing. Terrorising the community for his own ends and hiding in plain sight. If you love slasher films and jump scares, this is the book for you, packed with shocking twists and turns, it’ll make your hair stand on end.

We’re celebrating the release of Foxfire this week, a suspenseful horror by Rowan Hill!

Ebook cover

Foxfire

Publication Date: October 10, 2023

Genre: Horror/ Suspense/ Paranormal

In a remote Finnish resort, a group of potential investors gather to enjoy the Arctic beauty and the mesmeric Northern lights. But many of the guests aren’t who they appear to be, and everyone is hiding something–from the gaudy Americans to the adventurous German and Australian couple to the quiet Yakuza and his former Geisha wife.

Owner Mattais and his skeptical daughter, Aino, have ignored family legends, dismissing the warnings of honoring their ancient forest as silly, old-fashioned traditions. But when the guests start to be picked off one by one, their blood soaked in the snow, the old tales don’t seem so far-fetched anymore. A spectre haunts the forest and the survivors must decipher who–or what–is taking revenge.

“…FOXFIRE combines all the best elements of a tense, well-paced thriller with compelling folklore and horror, all in the stark, deadly and glittering setting of the frozen north…. “

About the Author

Rowan Hill is an Australian/ American author who has lived a little bit of everywhere. She primarily writes horror in isolated environments and feels everything is better with a creature feature. Self described as an 80s child, Rowan loves a good synth soundtrack and her hobbies include hiking mountains and traveling to far off places that she probably shouldn’t. She can be found on social media as @writerrowanhill or her website of the same name.

Rowan Hill

My thoughts: this was a suitably creepy creature feature, set in the remote Finnish forests of the Arctic.

Invited to explore an investment opportunity, in the form of a hotel with unusual glass igloos to sleep in, a group of disparate people – with previous connections, it turns out, assemble. The Aurora Borealis is high in the sky as something starts killing off the guests.

Is there an unnatural force in the forest, or is the killer among the group? If it is something other than human, what does it want?

Aino has come home to help her dad sell his hotel to the investors but she doesn’t really want to be there. Disconnected from the land her grandfather tried to teach her to love, she isn’t particularly engaged with things. But as it all starts to go horribly, terribly wrong, only she can stop this.

A mix of folklore and monster moments, as the bodies add up and the blood soaks into the snow, can Aino make it out of the forest and save the guests?

After moving with his family, Simon discovers that his new town is better fitting for a survivor in a horror movie rather than a junior in high school. He quickly befriends two other outsiders—Miles, the equally horror-obsessed new kid from New York City, and Riley, the resident goth girl with a secret.
