Blog Tour: The Better Mother – Emily Shiner

Zoe just wanted to help. Now she may have a killer in her home.

Zoe is happily married to Ethan until the day a 13-year-old boy shows up on their doorstep. He says his name is Micah and that Ethan is his father. Distressed because his mother is missing, Micah has come to them for help.

Ethan is wary – he didn’t know anything about Micah – but kind-hearted Zoe feels she can’t possibly turn her back on the boy. She welcomes him into their home and does her best to make him part of the family.

But there’s something off about Micah.

He lies constantly, creeps silently around the house and towers over Zoe, observing her every move. And his growing bond with Anna, Zoe’s young daughter, feels all wrong.

So when his mother’s body is found and the police start looking for the murderer, Zoe realizes something terrible…

He might already be in her home.

The Better Mother – the stunning psychological thriller from the best-selling author of Her Husband’s Secret.

Emily Shiner always dreamed of becoming an author but first served her time as a banker and a teacher. After a lifetime of devouring stacks of thrillers, she decided to try her hand at writing them herself. Now she gets to live out her dream of writing novels and sharing her stories with people around the world. She lives in the Appalachian Mountains and loves hiking with her husband, daughter, and their two dogs.

My thoughts: file this under; children are creepy. When Zoe opens the door to a young teenage boy who claims to be her husband’s son – conceived before they met, and whose mother never admitted his existence, she welcomes him in. His mum is missing and he has nowhere else to turn. He quickly bonds with his half sister, Zoe’s daughter Anna, but Zoe is convinced something isn’t quite right about Micah.

His story doesn’t quite add up, then his mother’s body is found, and after snooping on his laptop, it looks like he’s been stalking his dad’s family, and particularly her, for a while. Did he kill his mum?

Unfortunately Zoe’s husband, Ethan, doesn’t seem to be listening to her. And then he admits his ex, Micah’s mum, had been hassling him for money. Did he know he had a son?

Zoe knows she needs to protect Anna at all costs, but who from – Ethan or Micah? With shocking twists and turns, this is a sinister tale of family and fear.

Michael Butcher wants to know why his grandfather, a retired brigadier living in a tiny Rutland village, has decided to become an international trafficker in narcotics. Involving him in an elaborate

Michael Dane spent over ten years as an officer in the Customs and Excise National Investigation Service investigating drug trafficking, VAT fraud and smuggling of all kinds. He later retrained as a lawyer and joined the private sector where he investigated fraud and corruption all over the world.
He is retired and lives in the Vale of Belvoir.

My thoughts: I’d never really thought of Customs and Excise being involved in and running investigations like this, but it does make sense, as without a national police force, you do need an organisation able to join the dots from point of entry onwards.

The investigation is clever and gripping, with the team following their suspects around the country, wanting to catch them in the act and make arrests, but also follow the links in the chain to the people at the top – take the whole organisation down once and for all.

But an elderly brigadier interferes with their straightforward operation, by getting involved in a bit of old fashioned espionage and helping the drug dealers evade their shadows. Or is he? He might be retired and a little odd, but he might also be playing a completely different game. I felt a bit sorry for Michael, running risks but not knowing exactly what’s going on. I hope we come back to him and see how he gets on in future.

Meanwhile Frank McBride, who does work out what’s going on, because he knows everyone, and his team are closing in on the gang, but not on the mysterious “Peter”, who McBride decides to ignore in favour of busting the dealers, not hard to do when without help, they’re relying on sheer luck to stay out of jail.

A clever, tense and really enjoyable crime thriller featuring interesting characters and a different angle on the genre.

Blog Tour: No 23 Burlington Square – Jenni Keer

London, 1927: One house. Three lives. A decision that will change everything. A powerful, unique timeslip story, perfect for fans of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, The Miniaturist, and Lucinda Riley.
On the morning of Friday 5th August, 1927, Miss Agnes Humphries – the landlady of the attractive, if-slightly-shabby, white-fronted townhouse at Number 23 Burlington Square – has a decision to
make.
The rooms of the second floor lie empty, since poor Mr Blandford’s unfortunate demise, God rest his soul. And Agnes must make up her mind as to who will be her new lodger… Will it be her spirited, young niece Clara, who drifts through the glamorous world of London’s Bright Young Things?
Or Stephen, the sensible, church-going, respectable banker who seems just be too good to be true?
Or the timid war widow named Mercy, who is clearly running from something – or someone…?
Agnes must choose between them. But what will her decision lead to? One of the choices could result in scandal, one in devastation, and one could even lead to happiness. If only she gets it right…
As all three lodgers enter Number 23, in alternate timelines, relationships are formed and destroyed, feathers are ruffled, and secrets are exposed. Three different choices. Three very different paths. And Agnes is to discover that nobody – including herself – is quite who they seem…

My thoughts: as landlady Agnes weighs up which of her new prospective tenants to accept, we get to see what happens depending on who she chooses. Will it be her niece Clara, full of secrets and choosing to drown them in partying and drinking every night? Or Mr Thompson, who says he’s a bank clerk and churchgoer, but has his own darkness, that might threaten another resident. The final applicant is Mrs Mercy Mayweather, a widow from Suffolk, currently working as a shop girl in a department store. She also has secrets of her own, but they’re only dangerous to her.

Agnes has her own story too, how she ended up running her home as a boarding house, why she never married, and there’s also the current tenants – both with their own stories to tell.

A fascinating read and interesting premise, with enjoyable stories and likeable characters (although not all of them).

Book Blitz: Change of Heart – T.A. Williams

Two families at war and Alice finds herself caught in the middle. Can she re-write a story as old as time?
When cutbacks force Alice out of her assistant manager role at a Devonshire stately home, she turns her sights elsewhere: the picturesque hills above the historic city of Parma. An aristocratic Italian family are looking to open their medieval castle to the public, and Alice is just the woman for the job.
Four years ago, a life-changing accident pushed Alice into depression, but the beauty and charm of the Italian countryside works its magic in brightening her days. Especially when she keeps bumping into handsome Luca… But rivalries run deep in the town, and Alice’s work – not to mention her potential love life – are caught in the middle of a long-standing feud between two families.
With her job and future happiness in peril, can Alice save the future of the castle, and bring two warring families together?

I’m a man. And a pretty old man as well. I did languages at university a long time ago
and then lived and worked in France and Switzerland before going to Italy for seven years as a teacher of English. My Italian wife and I then came back to the UK with our little daughter (now long-since grown up) where I ran a big English language school for many years. We now live in a sleepy little village in Devonshire. I’ve been writing almost all my life but it was only ten years ago that I finally managed to find a publisher who liked my work enough to offer me my first contract.
The fact that I am now writing escapist romance is something I still find hard to explain. My early books were thrillers and historical novels and I now also write cozy crime, but my first love has always been romance. Maybe it’s because there are so many horrible things happening in the world today that I feel I need to do my best to provide something to cheer my readers up. My books provide escapism to some gorgeous locations and descriptions of food to make you drool.

Website Twitter Facebook

My thoughts: another marvellous escape to beautiful Italy from one of my favourite writers of fabulous romances. Alice has taken a job at a medieval castle in need of new income streams. The family are broke and the castle needs a lot to restore it and keep it theirs. Alice has lots of ideas of ways to bring new life to the town and the castle.

There’s also a handsome architect with a lovely Labrador (always a bonus) who catches her eye. He’s the estranged son of the town mayor, locked in a never-ending feud with the Baron’s family dating back centuries.

Luckily Alice is made of tough stuff, and while her relationship with the lovely Luca and his dog Frank, is going well, the castle is a bit tricky. Thankfully the family, even the initially unsure baron, are happy with all her ideas – alpacas, clearing some of the trees and selling the wood, a museum.

I really enjoyed this book, I liked Alice, despite her accident and the injury she now lives with, she’s good at her job, and makes new friends easily. It was just a really lovely, fun story and left me with a nice warm feeling.

Blog Tour: The Homemaker – Miranda Rijks

Maria always wanted a family. Now she’s found one.

Imogen has never been so busy – she’s juggling two jobs, has a young family and now she’s pregnant again.

Enter Maria, the perfect housekeeper. Hard working and capable, she seems like the ideal solution to Imogen’s chaotic life. But Maria isn’t at all what she seems – she has a sinister agenda of her own.

Little by little, she installs herself at the heart of Imogen’s family – doing the school run, cooking meals, caring for Imogen’s little girl.

But once she has won the family’s trust, Maria starts to do some digging. And discovers that Imogen has been keeping a terrible secret, a secret which Maria threatens to reveal unless Imogen starts to run this home the way Maria sees fit.

Caught between a rock and a hard place, Imogen has no choice but to comply.

A terrible mistake. Because as the full scale of Maria’s horrifying plan becomes apparent, Imogen realises that everything she holds dear – her marriage, her family, her friends – all may fall victim to The Homemaker.

The Homemaker – the chilling psychological thriller from the best-selling author of The Visitors and What She Knew.

She lives in Sussex, England with her Dutch husband, musician daughter and black Labrador.

This is her twentieth psychological thriller with Inkubator Books.

Facebook Instagram Twitter Website

My thoughts: this turned creepy really fast and all Imogen wanted was an extra pair of hands. Instead she got Maria – a dream of a housekeeper at first, then a steadily worsening nightmare.

Imogen runs a B & B out of her home, 2 nicely decorated bedrooms with ensuites, a freshly cooked breakfast in the morning. Allowing her to raise daughter Ava, and still offer a hotel consultancy service from home. Despite her husband telling her they don’t need the money, she wants to be independent. But the workload is increasing and she needs some help.

Hiring Maria, who can’t seem to do enough, should be great, but Maria forces her way further into their home and lives. And then Imogen’s friend Tom is killed in a hit and run, and events get worse and worse. Could Maria be behind it all?

Exploiting Imogen’s desire to find her biological parents, isolating her, harming Ava. There seems to be no extreme Maria won’t go to to get what she wants. With shocking results. Imogen needs to stop her, to save her family, but can she?

Twists and turns and shocking moments abound, and it turns the home into a terrifying place, the family might be sharing it with a killer.

Failde currently resides in her gothic manor on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, with her partner, Mike, and her familiar—the round but feisty calico cat, Maki.

J.M. Failde

My thoughts: running from the evil vampires who keep her prisoner, Lila enters the home of another vampire – The Crow Lord Ambrose Draven. In exchange for his help, she promises him five favours.

However she is no ordinary human, and as they grow close, Ambrose reveals her true nature – descendant of the woman whose death created vampires. He trains her to fight and kill his kind, even as they fall for one another.

This is a very spicy book, Ambrose and Lila’s relationship is not all roses and kisses, so definitely don’t leave this out for anyone too young to read, the author doesn’t hold back.

The plot is strong and the sex scenes don’t detract from it, Lila wants to save herself and her brother from the Viper Lord’s spoilt sons, but humans aren’t aware of how to kill vampires, who have taken over the land. Ambrose is a benevolent ruler of his people but not everyone is like him. As the book ends, war is about to break out and Lila turns undercover spy in order to stop her former masters. Leaving her relationship with Ambrose hanging.

My thoughts: I knew from the authors that this would be good, full of twists and turns, with characters you want to trust but aren’t sure of. And boy, does this deliver.

Libby is a paramedic and step-mum to teenage twins Sam and Sienna. Her marriage to Nathan seems solid but recently she thinks he’s been hiding things. Then a young woman is attacked, and Libby is first on the scene – the victim is a friend of her children and she can’t help but see her own kids in the same situation.

Being secretive is part of being a teenager, but Libby’s worried. Is Sam involved with what happened to Heather? Is Sienna up to something, having been spotted hanging around Heather’s house.

Then there’s Gemma, arrived in town investigating a serial killer from years ago, that might have links to Libby’s family. Can Libby keep it together and protect her family if one of them is a criminal?

The plot gets intense, twists and turns abound, I was totally hooked, utterly gripped and there were a few “no” gasps, especially towards the end as all the secrets came to light.

My thoughts: this was a very sweet and charming book about family, love and letting go. Sadie has to keep control of everything, she can’t let life just happen. But when her beloved grandmother, Gigi, is diagnosed with end stage cancer, she has to finally realise she can’t control everything.

With her family members – including her estranged brother, and long lost mother, finally coming home, and her ex-boyfriend back in town, can Sadie learn to love again, and banish her family’s curse for good?

Sadie’s family all have witchy gifts, some more useful than others, and there’s a curse to go with it. But Sadie can save herself and twin Seth, if she can figure out what she needs to do by the full moon.

Interspersed with the recipes Sadie uses in her cafe, there is a gentle love story as well as that of Sadie and her family, rebuilding their bonds after years apart. Super cosy and lovely.

Blog Tour: Moroccan Traffic – Dorothy Dunnett

Upwardly mobile and smart Wendy Helmann, Executive Secretary, is in Marrakesh with her mother while her boss, Chairman of Kingsley Conglomerates, conducts very delicate if slightly dubious takeover negotiations.

But while Morocco is a romantic place, Wendy finds herself side-tracked from its attractions by the antics of Rita Geddes and a few peripheral problems such as kidnapping, explosions, industrial espionage, murder and car chases across the High Atlas mountains . . . Enter Johnson Johnson and his yacht Dolly.

Dorothy Dunnett (1923-2001) gained an international reputation as a writer of historical fiction. She later turned to crime writing with the acclaimed Dolly books, aka the Johnson Johnson series. She was a trustee of the National Library of Scotland, and a board member of the Edinburgh International Book Festival. In 1992 she was awarded an OBE for her services to literature. A leading light in the Scottish arts world and a renaissance woman, Dunnett was also a professional portrait painter and exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy on many occasions.

My thoughts: the final Dolly book, and it brings the return of Rita Geddes from the first book – Tropical Issue – but now she’s the head of a large corporation and not a make up artist. Whose company is the target of a hostile takeover. But first there’s total chaos, with kidnappings, car chases and other crazy things.

Secretary Wendy Helmann, and her crazy mother, who might actually be a spy or something, are in town too, to assist with the takeover, until they get dragged into the nuttiness. It might be Johnson Johnson’s most outrageous outing yet.

Packed with references to the previous books in the series, this is a hilarious, totally over the top and delightful read.

Book Review: The Fortunes of Olivia Richmond – Louise Davidson

After a terrible tragedy, governess Julia Pearlie finds herself with no job, home, or references. When she’s offered a position as companion to Miss Olivia Richmond, her luck appears to be turning. But Mistcoate House is full of secrets.

Olivia has a sinister reputation. The locals call her the Mistcoate Witch, thanks to her tarot readings, and her insistence that she can speak to the dead. Her father, Dr Richmond, believes this to be girlish fantasy and is looking to Julia to put a stop to it.

Determined to prove herself and shake off her own murky history, Julia sets to work trying to help Olivia become a proper young lady. However, as she becomes a fixture at Mistcoate, it is soon clear that there may be more to Olivia’s stories than Dr Richmond would have Julia believe – not least because somehow, Olivia seems to know something of the darkness that Julia desperately hoped she had left behind.

As the danger grows, and the winter chill wraps around the dark woods surrounding Mistcoate, Julia will have to fight to uncover the truth, escape her past – and save herself.

Original and engrossing, this chilling Victorian Gothic ghost story is an outstanding piece of storytelling, perfect for fans of Sarah Perry, Erin Morgenstern and Jessie Burton.

Moonflower Books

©️ Fordtography

Louise Davidson was born in Belfast and has always worked in the creative arts in some capacity – from assistant to theatre directors to teaching scriptwriting classes in prisons to teaching English and drama to A-Level students. Growing up in Northern Ireland backgrounded by the Troubles led to a fascination with history, and this combined with her love of all things gothic inspired her to write her first book, a dark Victorian thriller set in a neglected and isolated mansion. Louise lives in London with her husband and step-son, and in her spare time is working on fulfilling her ambition to visit every museum in the city. The Fortunes of Olivia Richmond is her debut novel.

My thoughts: set in a suitably Gothic and somewhat sinister house, buried in the woods, this is a perfect Halloween read. Unreliable narrators, characters with buckets of secrets, ghosts, a violent figure hiding in the forest, suspicious locals, and a young woman who says she can see spirits, and reads the tarot to some of the townspeople, causing friction.

Julia must make her own way in the world, having inherited nothing useful from her mother, and with a brother who doesn’t want to help. So she was working as a governess, but after a terrible incident at her last post she’s floundering.

Hired as a companion to doctor’s daughter Olivia Richmond, at Mistcoate in Norfolk, she’s fully aware this is her last chance to get a good reference and earn some money. Her employer wants her to prepare his troubled daughter for the Season in London, where he hopes to find her a husband.

But things are not right at Mistcoate, Olivia is known locally as a witch, claiming to see the dead and be able to divine the future. She’s been looked after by the housekeeper since her mother died when she was very young. But the housekeeper, Mrs Hayes, isn’t all she seems, and is bitterly jealous of Julia’s relationship with Olivia.

As events unfold and take a dark turn, Julia becomes afraid of the household, apart from old Captain Reynolds and the maid of all work Marian. She also becomes close to the local vicar Ed and his sister Alice. These friendships keep her sane as things get stranger and more volatile. Her employer, Dr Reynolds, insists on holding “examinations” of his daughter, assisted only by the housekeeper, and threatens Julia with the sack.

The book amps up the tension and you really feel for Julia, although she also has secrets and the ghosts seem to cling to her, symbols of her guilt, perhaps.

The ending is ambiguous, will Olivia be alright in her new life in London and will Julia and Ed make a go of it? Have they truly escaped the ghosts and demons of their pasts?
