Blog Tour: The Art of Prophecy – Wesley Chu

Bestselling author Wesley Chu is back with a thrilling wuxia-inspired fantasy that questions what happens when a prophecy goes badly wrong.

Prophecies don’t make heroes: they only choose them. When Chosen One Jian falls short of his prophesied quest, he must find his own path to greatness.

The prophecy is clear: Wen Jian is the Chosen One, born to defeat the immortal Eternal Khan and save the kingdom. The only problem is that the prophecy is wrong.

Jian has been raised in splendor, trained by the best warriors, and celebrated before a single battle has been won. After all, he’s the chosen one, selected by prophecy to defeat the immortal god-king and free the kingdom for good. But when the prophecy is proven to be incorrect, Jian still has to find a way to succeed—and maybe even become a hero in his own right.

To save the kingdom, an unlikely band of heroes rise: Taishi, an old grandmaster who swore her days of battle were over; Sali, a warrior re-evaluating her allegiances; and Qisami, an assassin with questionable values. Together, the four embark on a journey more wondrous than any prophecy could forsee.

My thoughts: this was really good, fun and I can imagine it making an amazing film. Taishi was easily my favourite character, a cranky, tired warrior, now stuck with the pampered and not remotely prepared prophesied hero, that every one wants dead. Including the hilarious assassin Qisami and the irritated beyond belief Sali.

Inspired by the author’s love of martial arts, wuxia movies and his Taiwanese heritage, this is filled with brilliant one on one fights and incredible stunts, Taishi is a windwhisper and can manipulate air currents to aid her in battle, Sali carries an ingenious tongue, part whip, part sword, Qisami loves her vicious knives.

Throw in a trainee doctor, a map maker’s daughter, a war monk and some half trained fighters and you have a gang of misfits around Jian, the not exactly a hero. But somehow they just have to keep him alive, something about destiny.

Bits of this honestly made me laugh out loud, there’s some incredible fight scenes, there’s loads of banter, a city in a mine shaft, temples, terrifying hyena like creatures, a desert called the Sand Snake and a Grass Sea. The imagery is incredible. And so vividly brought to life, I could imagine the crowded city of Jiayi where much of the story takes place easily, from the descriptions.

Book one of a new series and it ends with so many loose threads that will hopefully be picked up in the next book, leaving me (and you) eagerly awaiting it. Exciting.

Meet Grim Reaper #2497. Behind on his work, he must complete his quota of thirty Random Deaths or face termination in the worst way. Faced with an insurmountable task and very little time to complete it, Reaper #2497 struggles to hang on to the one thing he’s not supposed to have – his humanity.

Sarah McKnight has been writing stories since she could pick up a pencil, and it often got her in trouble during math class. After a brief stint teaching English to unruly middle schoolers in Japan, she decided she wasn’t going to put off her dream of becoming a writer any longer and set to work. With several novels in the making, she hopes to tackle issues such as anxiety, depression, and letting go of the past – with a little humor sprinkled in, too. A St. Louis native, she currently lives in Pennsylvania with her wonderful husband and three cats. You can find her on Twitter @mcknight_writes and http://www.sarahmcknightwrites.com.

My thoughts: a Reaper is someone who, for whatever reason, committed murder while alive and is now fated to collect the souls of the dying. Oh, plus 30 random deaths that they have to pick themselves. Talk about a moral dilemma. At least it is for Reaper #2497, formerly known as Steve. He’s not a cold blooded killer, and is having trouble making his monthly 30. Especially after meeting Heather, a living person who can see and speak to him.

He tries, with plenty of black humour, to pick 30 fairly awful humans or at least ones with only a few years left to live. Should a Reaper feel guilt? Well Steve does. And that’s not going to end well. He can’t find a loophole or an answer to his problem anywhere at Reaper HQ and the Big Boss is getting cross with him. What’s a Reaper to do?

Blackly comic and smart, this is an entertaining read that asks a pretty pertinent question – could you follow an order blindly like Reapers are supposed to?

Blog Tour: The First Cut – Val Penny

It’s hard to escape a brutal past.

A vicious killer is on the loose .
Victims targeted include an academic and members of Edinburgh’s high society.

When the Murder Investigation Team find out that the killer is connected to her past, DS Jane Renwick is banished to the side-lines and forced to look on as the manhunt ramps up at a ferocious pace.

Has someone from Jane’s birth family returned to haunt her?
Is one of her relatives involved?

Where will the killer strike next?

This gripping police procedural is set in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The exciting novel is the first in Val Penny’s new series of Scottish thrillers.

Val Penny has an Llb degree from Edinburgh University and her MSc from Napier University. She has had many jobs including hairdresser, waitress, banker, azalea farmer and lecturer but has not yet achieved either of her childhood dreams of being a ballerina or owning a candy store.

Until those dreams come true, she has turned her hand to writing poetry, short stories, nonfiction, and novels.

Val is an American author living in SW Scotland. She has two adult daughters of whom she is justly proud and lives with her husband and their cat.

My thoughts: this was a really clever, gripping police procedural. Sidelined after a familial DNA match, DS Jane Renwick won’t just go home and twiddle her thumbs, she’s determined to find out whether her estranged brothers are out there – and which one of them’s a killer. She’s also picked up a stalker, is he her brother too?

The rest of the team are hard at work, looking for connections between the victims, trying to work out how the killer picked them and why, so they can stop him. Armed with Jane’s information, they’re also looking for her brothers. All three might be killers – their jobs suggest as much – as long as they’ve got the right Smiths!

I liked the characters of Jane and Rachael, their friends and colleagues, the way that even amidst terrible crimes they find time to banter and joke, stop for fish and chips, but always with half a mind on the investigation. I think this could be a really great series.

Blog Tour: Jam Run – Russell Brooks

What if crying out for help made you a target?

Within hours of arriving in Montego Bay, Eddie Barrow and his friend Corey Stephenson witness a gruesome murder outside a bar. When the victim’s sister reaches out for help, they learn of machinations to conceal foreign corporate corruption and a series of horrific sex crimes. However, Barrow and Stephenson’s commitment to solving the case is put to the test once they find themselves in the crosshairs of a ruthless criminal network—one that extends beyond the shores of Jamaica.

If you enjoy heart-pounding thrillers with conspiracies, martial arts, sex, betrayal, and revenge, then you don’t need to look any further and see why these are among the best mystery thriller books of all time.

My thoughts: this was really good, it hooked me right from the start as Eddie and Corey get involved in the terrible death of a young gay man in Jamaica. They’re there on Eddie’s book tour but after witnessing the crime, and seeing the disinterest of the police, they can’t help but look into it. The victim’s sister shows up at the book signing and Eddie promises to help.

Unfortunately Dwayne’s tragic death is part of something much bigger, a conspiracy that crosses oceans and far more complex than the two men originally think. There’s other terrible crimes all tangled up in it too, as they pursue another witness with a sad past.

Corruption, child abuse, homophobia, intellectual property theft, police looking the other way, it’s all in there. Along the way there are some powerful allies to go along with the dangerous enemies they’ve made. Eddie and Corey put their lives on the line for the truth.

My thoughts: this was great fun, as Caelum and his friends set out to rescue Brigid from the evil siren goddess Cliodhna. Along the way they are aided by a mysterious witch and two kind, brave people. Caelum is wanted for the murder of his father, a just death but not according to his father’s allies. They must also protect the orphanage, where the children they rescued are living.

Luckily both Caelum’s crew and the syrens are fierce and brave, they won’t let anything happen to those they care about. So they prepare to defend each other and the children.

It’s a fast moving story, lots of running headlong into danger, but sometimes you have to!

About the Author

James T. Hogg is the pseudonym of one of the most prominent New York City real estate attorneys. As a real-life attorney he has published two non-fiction books about real estate and business, one of which was a Wall Street Journal best seller.

Girl With a Knife is his first novel, based on a story he told many times to his now-grown children. His goal was to create a story that the reader simply cannot put down, even when it is midnight and the reader needs to sleep.

In this novel, Hogg has created a world where girls and women of all cultures are equal or superior to the male characters around them, an epic tale that will appeal to women and men of all ages.

James T. Hogg

My thoughts: this is an interesting and intense story of injustice and struggle, set when the United States was still young and expanding. Moving back and forth between two narratives – the assault on Chloe and that of a young Native American woman.

Chloe is violently attacked by the sons of a prominent family in their small town, a family that will do anything to stay in power. Her sister Faythe will do anything to right this terrible wrong.

Nununyi is a young Native woman, injured in a fight with white men. Rescued by one of these men, who wants a different life, he nurses her back to health and they become a couple. She is drawn to her tribe and her childhood sweetheart, who thinks she’s dead.

Both women will have to overcome the prejudices and ignorance of the age, having to be tougher than many of the men around them. As the first part of this story ends, Faythe’s father is accused of a crime, and it will be up to her to help him.

Blog Tour: Strangers in the Night – Heather Webb

It was the tumultuous romance that scandalized the world: Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner fought, loved, and lived life to the hilt. Now their unbridled story is brought vividly to life by Heather Webb, the bestselling author of Meet Me in Monaco and The Next Ship Home. In the golden age of Hollywood, two of the brightest stars would define—and defy—an era…

She was the small-town southern beauty transformed into a Hollywood love goddess. He was the legendary crooner whose voice transfixed the world. They were Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra. Separately they were irresistible; together they were an explosive combination. Ava’s star is rising just as Frank’s career—and public image as a family man—is taking a hit. Gone are the days of the screaming bobbysoxers and chart-topping hits. Ava, however, finds herself gracing the front page of every tabloid in America. Jealousy and cheating abound, and when the two succumb to their temperaments and their vices, their happiness is threatened at every turn. As the pair ride the rollercoaster of success and failure, passion and anger, they both wonder if the next turn will be the end of their careers, and most devastating of all—the end of all they’ve shared.

A captivating novel with a star-studded cast spanning continents and decades, Strangers in the Night brings to life the most riveting love story of the twentieth century.

Heather Webb is the award-winning and USA Today bestselling author of The Last Ship Home, The Phantom’s Apprentice, Rodin’s Lover, and Becoming Josephine. Heather is also a freelance editor, and teaches craft courses at a local college. Her novels have been translated into more than a dozen languages, worldwide. She lives in Connecticut with her family and one feisty rabbit.

My thoughts: like the author I grew up listening to Frank Sinatra as played by my Grandad – first on vinyl and then on CD. I can still remember him soft shoe shuffling round the living room saying “this is the song, this is the song!” So I was intrigued to read a novel based on his controversial relationship with second wife Ava Gardner.

He was still married to Nancy, mother of Frank Jr, Nancy and Tina, when he met film star Gardner, who was at the time married to fellow actor Mickey Rooney. Hence the controversy. Although she was single when their affair really started, and in this book pushes him to do the right thing and divorce Nancy, rather than be his mistress.

Drawing from various sources, including official biographies, this book charts their volatile marriage, both parties affairs, the rows, the separation, their lifelong friendship, up to Ava’s sad death in her London flat from a pneumonia related condition.

She was incredibly beautiful, and talented, but never felt like she attained the fame that she wanted. He was the bigger star, but was going through a career lull when they married, but would go on to win an Oscar and bounce back in both film and music. They were a volatile combination, both with massive egos, career driven and terminally unfaithful (him more than her).

It’s an incredibly fascinating read, hard to say how much is fact and how much the author’s creation. Neither wrote an autobiography, although Tina Sinatra wrote about her dad, and was perhaps best placed to do so, and the author draws on this book.

It is however a fun insight into the glamorous world they lived in, there’s a lot of name dropping, although these are their friends and co-stars, from Lana Turner to the Rat Pack, Montgomery Clift to Grace Kelly. Hollywood in its heyday.

Blog Tour: Infinity Gate – M.R. Carey

From the international bestselling M. R. Carey comes a thrilling tale set in the multiverse – the tale of humanity’s expansion across millions of dimensions, and the AI technology that might see it all come to an end . . . INFINITY IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

The Pandominion: a political and trading alliance of a million worlds – except that they’re really just the one world, Earth, in many different realities. And when an AI threat arises that could destroy everything the Pandominion has built, they’ll eradicate it by whatever means necessary, no matter the cost to human life. Scientist Hadiz Tambuwal is looking for a solution to her own Earth’s environmental collapse when she stumbles across the secret of inter-dimensional travel. It could save everyone on her dying planet, but now she’s walked into the middle of a war on a scale she never dreamed of. And she needs to choose a side before it kills her.

Discover the start of the thrillingly original, mind-bending SF duology The Pandominion, from the author of the million-copy bestseller The Girl With All the Gifts. Perfect for fans of The Space Between Worlds, The Long Earth and Children of Time.

Photo Credit: Mark Mainz / Getty Images

M. R. Carey has been making up stories for most of his life. His novel The Girl With All the Gifts has sold over a million copies and became a major motion picture, based on his own BAFTA Award-nominated screenplay.

Under the name Mike Carey he has written for both DC and Marvel, including critically acclaimed runs on Lucifer, Hellblazer and X-Men. His creator-owned books regularly appear in the New York Times bestseller list. He also has several previous novels including the Felix Castor series (written as Mike Carey), two radio plays and a number of TV and movie screenplays to his credit.

My thoughts: imagine if there really is a multiverse, millions of versions of Earth, sitting alongside each other, each slightly different to the previous. Imagine there’s a technology that allows to Step into each world. Now imagine a terrifying autocratic regime that controls a lot of those worlds, with augmented soldiers and the power to basically crush your planet’s. And they’re at war with robots – robots that are sort of alive.

It sounds really confusing, but it isn’t. Because like many books, it’s about people. A scientist, an AI, a giant bunny, a machine that doesn’t want to go home, a soldier and a man who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time really. Oh and a mysterious omniscient narrator.

It’s a sci fi novel with lots of twists and turns, lots of embracing the unknown and the terrifying, lots of action but also nobody really knows what they’re doing. But something does.

M.R. Carey is a brilliant writer, and this is an extremely readable, enjoyable book. I didn’t even pretend to understand what Hadiz did to develop her technology, physics is not my thing, but just went with it. Which is probably the default of most of the characters and everyone around them.

There’s some very funny moments, and some incredibly dark ones. I liked that it was set in Lagos and its mirror selves rather than New York or wherever, it was refreshing to read something set in a city that’s not familiar from a million other books, made me feel a bit like the characters – it’s like their homes but also, distinctly, not.

And the ending, no spoilers but I absolutely need book two immediately to find out what happens next!

Blog Tour: Promises of the Runes – Christina Courtenay

My thoughts: this time we travel with Ivar to ninth century Norway, or what will become Norway. Ivar is related to the protagonists of this series’ other books and as both an archaeologist and a man passionate about tracing his roots, he’s determined to go back in time and meet his family’s ancestor – Thorald and his family.

Accepted tentatively by his relative, they embark on a trip to assist Thorald’s brother-in-law reclaim his heritage, and Ivar meets the girl of his dreams – quite literally.

Proving himself to be the Indiana Jones style of archaeologist, he’s willing to get stuck into the adventures, willing to fight even (having hung out and trained with re-enactors) and determined to protect the woman he’s falling hard for. Even though he doesn’t think he could spend forever in the past – unlike his foster sisters.

Having a male protagonist is interesting, seeing the adventure from a different perspective. Much like Linnea, Sara and Madison, he’s kind, clever and brave. I’m not sure how many of us would cope in such a different world 1000 years ago.

This story really reaffirms that family is found and made – it doesn’t have to be people you’re related to – unless they’re your many times great-grandfather!

Blog Tour: Whitecliff Bay; The One Who Fell – Kerry Wilkinson

Something slightly different today, there are three books out so far in this series – book four follows in a couple of months, and I’m reviewing book one today. However I highly recommend the whole series – details for books two and three follow my review of book one – The One Who Fell.

In the seaside town of Whitecliff, everyone looks out for each other. Everyone knows your name. And everyone knows your secrets…

Moonlight falls on the figure of the girl standing on the red-tiled roof. Her white dress and blonde hair flutter in the freezing night wind. And suddenly – she is gone.

Volunteering at the local nursing home is Millie Westlake’s one escape from the rumours that swirl around Whitecliff about her past. But speaking with elderly resident, Ingrid, as they play board games, Millie gets chills at her strange story about a young girl being pushed from a roof, somewhere across the valley…

Everybody thinks Ingrid is confused: but Millie knows how it feels to not be believed. Her parents died a year ago, and the residents of Whitecliff – such a quiet place, other than crashing waves and cawing seagulls – are convinced Millie killed them.

Desperately searching for evidence to find the girl Ingrid saw, a broken roof tile could prove Ingrid was telling the truth. But when strange footprints appear in Millie’s garden, she’s certain someone out there is watching.

Have Ingrid and Millie stumbled across something terribly dangerous? And with the town against her, will Millie have to face up to her own secrets to solve the mystery before it becomes deadly?

An utterly compelling, character-driven mystery by bestselling author Kerry Wilkinson, perfect for fans of Faith Martin, Mary Burton and LJ Ross.

My thoughts: I really enjoyed the author’s previous books I’ve read so I was looking forward to this and it’s cracking. A resident at the nursing home where she volunteers tells Millie she saw a woman jump off the roof of the house opposite, and while Ingrid may suffer from some confusion, she’s positive about what she saw. Millie decides to have a little snoop and soon she’s sure something is going on in the house opposite the nursing home.

But Millie isn’t a police officer, and in an unfriendly town, where people think she’s involved in her parents’ deaths, it’s going to be hard to make anyone believe her. Retired journalist Guy might have written some nasty things about her, but he might also be the only one who will help.

Millie is a great protagonist, and the hints about her past make her more interesting – why has she stayed in a town where she’s a subject of gossip, did she have anything to do with her parents dying? She’s not entirely trustworthy, she definitely has secrets. So does Guy, and between them they’re highly likely to find things out but also put people’s backs up. Digging into things could make trouble for them both, and Millie’s either incredibly brave or just has no sense of danger, not everyone likes a nosey neighbour.

This first step into Whitecliff Bay is full of secrets and mysteries, and for somewhere where people claim to know their neighbours, an awful lot goes completely unseen and unnoticed. This series gets better and better with each book, so check out the next two below too and get reading!

In the darkness, the girl slumps against the rough tree bark. Her eyes are closed, her wrists tied. As consciousness fades, her last thought is of her best friend, and how much she regrets what she did…

Seventeen-year-old best friends Nicola and Millie were supposed to have a summer night of fun and freedom in the local park. But when dawn comes Millie realises Nicola is missing. Distraught, she searches for her alone: and finds Nicola tied to a tree, her purple Converse shoes missing, her long hair cut and scattered on the ground. With no memory of what happened, terrified Nicola begs Millie never to speak of this again…

Fifteen years later. With countless secrets and hurt between them, Millie and Nicola have not spoken in over a decade. But now Nicola has found her old purple Converse strung up in her garden. Is her attacker sending a message? Why now, after all this time?

Up on the desolate moor, she tightens her coat against the bitter wind. The man she followed here points to a rock embedded in the mossy earth. ‘This is the place.’ But when they dig, what will they find?

Everyone in the small seaside town of Whitecliff knows the name Kevin Ashworth. Two boys disappeared thirty years ago – and although local teacher Kevin never admitted to knowing where their bodies are, he’s been in prison ever since.

Now, Kevin is finally ready to talk: but only to amateur sleuth Millie Westlake and journalist Guy Rushden. With the families of the boys desperate for answers, Guy and Millie are led to a lonely spot on the moors above Whitecliff. They’re on the moors expecting to find bodies… but what if they find something even more terrifying?

Reeling from their discovery, as Millie scours the local countryside and speaks to heartbroken families what she discovers changes everything she believes about Whitecliff and the people who live here. With rumours about her own dark past still haunting Millie, can she ever get justice for a decades-old wrong? Or as she gets closer to finding out who else Kevin has hurt, will she learn that some secrets are destined to stay buried?

An absolutely addictive mystery read that fans of LJ Ross, Mary Burton and Faith Martin won’t be able to put down.
